At the beginning of Chinese New Year at Colwill Kindergarten we discussed how different cultures celebrate festivals.
We walked around our garden at kindy and found trees that had great meaning in the Chinese culture e.g. mandarin tree signifies wealth and good luck; plum trees – endurance and courage; peach blossoms – prosperity and growth.
After all of that, we Googled and found out that the cherry blossom tree is of great importance during the Chinese New Year because it signifies Spring, the renewal of life and a new beginning. And that inspired us to create our own cherry blossom tree.
Tamariki picked and they plucked, they painted and they laughed and then patiently attached each petal to the branches. We were all very impressed by their eagerness and willingness to embrace cultural diversity
