Reflections from Carol Dawson

When I arrived in Auckland in 1987 with my husband and our two children, who were just two and four years old, I never imagined that Pakuranga Kindergarten would become such an important part of my life. My son, David, attended Pakuranga Kindergarten, and to say I was amazed by the environment was an understatement! There was a flying fox, a carpentry area and trolleys for the children to explore. I remember thinking how incredible it was that children had so much freedom to play, explore, take risks and learn through their experiences.

The head teacher at the time was the wonderful Bronwyn Glass. She was an amazing teacher and, somehow, managed to get David a place at the kindergarten even though there was a waiting list. I will always remember her kindness and the opportunity she gave our family.

My experience at Pakuranga Kindergarten left such an impression that it inspired me to complete my degree and pursue a career in early childhood education.

And now, all these years later, I find myself back where it all began — not only as a teacher, but as Head Teacher of the very kindergarten my son attended all those years ago.

As I prepare to retire, it feels incredibly special to look back and realise just how much Pakuranga Kindergarten has been woven into my life. What started as a place where my little boy came to play and learn became the place where I found my own passion and career.

I feel very lucky to have come full circle — from being a young mum dropping off my little boy, to becoming a teacher, and eventually leading the kindergarten. There have been so many wonderful children, families and colleagues along the way, and so many memories that I will treasure.
