Onehunga Kindergarten recently celebrated a very special milestone—100 years since it first opened its doors on 9 November 1925 in the Coronation Hall. As one of the early kindergartens established by Ngā Tamariki Puāwai o Tāmaki | Auckland Kindergarten Association, it has long been a place where young tamariki begin their learning journey, grounded in play, connection, and belonging.

Our celebration, held on Wednesday 11 March 2026, brought together tamariki, whānau, past pupils, kaiako, and members of our wider community. It was a day filled with warmth, reflection, and pride in all that has come before us.

Our tamariki shared beautiful performances that captured the joy and spirit of our kindergarten, while heartfelt words from our Parent Chair touched us all and reminded us of the strong sense of community that continues to surround our centre.

A special highlight of the day was the unveiling and blessing of our carved pare, Hātepe Toa, created by local artist Donald Jessep. Donald shared the story of the carving process and the meaning behind the design, reflecting the strength, history, and connections that have shaped Onehunga Kindergarten over the past century. The blessing, led by Matua Aonui alongside tamariki from Te Papapa Primary, was a deeply meaningful moment connecting past, present, and future.

The celebration concluded with a shared luncheon, where stories were exchanged, memories revisited, and new connections made.

Reaching 100 years is more than a milestone—it is a reflection of generations of kaiako, tamariki, and whānau who have shaped this special place. As we look ahead, we carry these stories with us, continuing a legacy of learning, care, and community for the next 100 years.
