Our tamariki at Ōtāhuhu Kindergarten have missed riding their balancing bikes while they have waited for them to be repaired. So, during the term break our Head Teacher Tina visited “S Double S services” in Clover Park. Scott Titi Tulua runs a nonprofit group serving Ōtara and the wider community where Scott repairs, services and assembles preloved bikes and runs his services on a koha basis. In keeping with our kaupapa of sustainable practices, we not only purchased 4 balancing bikes at a great price, but also supported a great local community service.
On our first day of term, we had a kōrero with tamariki about how to look after our bikes. We spoke about taking turns (with a timer + sign in sheet), being responsible, and looking after our resources. We will take our broken bikes to Scott for repair and we will encourage our own whānau and community to use these services as a way to reduce waste, recycle and better our environment.
