Have you heard of Spoonville? Spoonville originated in Winnersh, Birkshire, England, when a lady named Karen created some spoony characters to cheer up her local community during a COVID-19 lockdown. It has now spread around the world and interest is growing here in New Zealand also.
Here at Don Buck Kindergarten we decided this would be a fun activity to get involved in upon returning to kindergarten under Level 3. It was an exciting activity to engage our small bubble of returning tamariki in, something creative and playful, an opportunity to sit down and reconnect after such a long time away. Our tamariki have loved creating their spoon characters. They have enjoyed playing with them during the day, and taking them home to show their families, before finally deciding on a spot for them to live in Spoonville.
It is only early days for Spoonville outside Don Buck Kindergarten, but it is so exciting to see the enjoyment it is bringing! Our bubble children are rushing up each morning to check it when they arrive, eager to notice if any new spoon friends have arrived! We hope that this activity can weave some connection between our tamariki attending kindergarten, those at home who we are encouraging to participate, and our local community who are also showing a growing interest, and bring a bit of fun for all.
