Kia ora and welcome to Onehunga Kindergarten

Incredible outdoor area – We have a large and spacious outdoor area where tamariki have many opportunities to run, cycle, swing, play and explore – a perfect environment to develop creativity, imagination, and strong fundamental movement skills while having a lot of fun!

Play ball – Every Monday after lunch our tamariki enjoy taking part in a Play ball session. This is a program where our tamariki engage in quality movement experiences that incorporate locomotor, manipulative, body awareness, and stability skills, being part of a team, and taking turns.

Our values – Manaakitanga (respect, care) and whānaungatanga (strong relationships with our whānau) are Māori values that underpin our practice. We value whānau involvement and welcome whānau to share their knowledge, skills, and ways of doing, so that together we can achieve the best learning outcomes possible for their tamariki.

Education for sustainability –  Taking care of Papatūānuku and learning about being kaitiaki (guardians) is an integral part of our programme. We have compost bins, a worm farm, water barrels, and garden beds. Kaiako and tamariki engage and work alongside each other composting, planting, nurturing, harvesting, and cooking. Matauranga Māori is weaved through our practice, teaching and learning tikanga.

Tiny Tim and Tiny Tahi – They are our two special little toy turtles that live at kindy and get the opportunity to go home with our tamariki to find out what they do at home and out in their community to look after Papatūānuku. Composting at home, gardening, clearing litter off the beaches and even having a play in the playground are just a few of the experiences our turtles have with tamariki and their whānau. These experiences are shared with tamariki and whānau at hui time and on Storypark.

Supporting tamariki – We place a lot of importance on supporting tamariki with their social and emotional skills. Our kaiako are skilled in implementing the Incredible Years programme which supports our tamariki with self-regulation and their social, emotional and academic competence.

Dedicated teaching team – All kaiako are fully qualified and registered, and we are dedicated to, and passionate about, early childhood education. We facilitate a child-centered learning programme based on the Aotearoa early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki. We are committed to the care and education of young tamariki in Onehunga and Te Papapa and enjoy supporting them to find a sense of belonging in their local community.

Get in touch with our team today, we would love to show you around our kindergarten!

  • FROM OUR ERO REPORT

Parents are comfortable in the kindergarten, many staying to settle their children at the start of the day. They communicate frequently with teachers about their children's learning and development.
