When Mission Bay Kindergarten visited Rangitoto Island they took 30 children, 30 adults, and, of course, a volcanologist!
After a ferry ride we disembarked and headed towards the summit! Along the way we were lucky enough to see saddlebacks, piwakawaka, tui and Eurasian blackbirds. Nearing the summit, some of us ventured out to see the lava caves while others walked to the summit and around the crater. There were some magnificent views of the city and Mission Bay!
One of our parents is a volcanologist and with her fountain of knowledge she stopped and explained how Rangitoto was formed, about the plates, different types of rock and how to use magnifying glasses to see the varieties of rock.
At the end of the day, lots of tired children and parents caught the ferry back to the city!
