Snells Beach Kindergarten children and whānau were involved in a beach clean at Martins Bay during Sea Week. The rubbish collected filled a fish bin and so much of it was little tiny bits of plastic. Children learned this is mistakenly eaten by sea creatures making them very sick. Children are showing manaakitanga, a culture of caring for their wider community and environment with their actions. We love that this has started a regular habit for some families who have been back to the beach to do even more cleaning up.
Children also helped people affected by Cyclone Gabrielle, raising $180 by contributing to a Red Cross coin trail.
Children earned the money at home by doing tasks like setting the table, tidying their bedroom and even doing the vacuum cleaning. The teachers are so proud of the children’s manaakitanga, kindness and caring for others.
