Massey Kindergarten are proud to have attained Green Gold status as part of their Enviroschool journey.

Debbie Upham, Education for Sustainability Specialist says, “What an amazing, gentle and kind kindergarten. It was a pleasure to take part and share in the reflection where the kaupapa of Enviroschools could be seen, felt and heard through the beautiful weave of the guiding principles, people and participation, place, practices and programme”.

Head Teacher Dave Canovas says “The sense of kotahitanga became so embedded in our practice that we resolved to utilise this to tap into what has been a deepening interest of our tamariki – planting and gardening and everything that goes with it – bugs, tools, soil, peers, resources.

“In this journey, we have learned that the process of discovery becomes part of children’s play and that finding the answers may not hold as much meaning as the act of searching for answers itself.

“We see our tamariki and we acknowledge how their eyes light up and how they always express their intention to take part whenever they see one of their Kaiako engaging in the process of planting and gardening. When Kaiako dig, they instinctively want to dig too. When we pull weeds, they want to pull weeds as well. When we pour worm tea into empty milk containers, they naturally ask to do it themselves. Such courage and initiative from our tamariki! And while doing these things, our tamariki would always take it further – with all their critical questions! “Why?”; “What is that?” and “How?”. Such curious minds!”
