The children worked with one of our teachers to try painting on canvases. We had been inspired by the season of spring to look for some sunflowers to plant at Anchorage Park Kindergarten but couldn’t find any so we decided to paint sunflowers instead! The process required many steps, first painting the background with blue and white paint, then drawing the outlines for the leaves and painting in the shapes of the stems and leaves with the two tones of green. Later, the children painted their sunflower heads using a golden yellow, and a light golden yellow to give some definition. The inside of the sunflower heads was done using a cotton bud and a painting technique called pointillism which the children had explored earlier in the term.
We are so proud of the children’s efforts! The canvases look amazing and are now proudly hanging in the children’s homes. Ka mau te wehi!
