On Monday 8th May, Aorere held their open day for ‘Discover Your Local Papatoetoe Kindergartens’. During this day we had ‘Process Cooking’ available for the children and for families to come in and have a try. Process Cooking involves step-by-step processes displayed on recipe cards, where children can create their own baking to take home. The recipes we used were for scones and mouse traps. Other Process Cooking recipes that we use at kindergarten include muffins, roti, cookies, and we are in the process of developing more of these, such as pizza, cupcakes and coconut buns.
Please feel free to come in any time to our kindergarten to see how this works. Process Cooking is offered regularly to the children as it has great benefits including social skills (confidence, working with others, feeling empowered and a sense of achievement, waiting for turns, showing consideration), science and maths (mixing raw ingredients and cooking them to make food to eat, measuring, mixing, counting and pouring), literacy skills (learning new terms, talking to each other, describing what they are doing), and leadership skills (confident children can use their expertise to help and support others, encouraging tuakana teina relationships).
