Here at Sunnyvale Kindergarten, we are proud to be exhibiting our very own “Whale Tale” sculpture at Point Chevalier Library as part of the WWF Whale Tale Arts Trail. She was officially named by the tamariki as “Mermaid Whale”. She will decorate the big windows of the library for a short while before she finally returns to permanently live with us at the kindergarten.

A big thank you to Kaiako Sarah, Janene and all of the tamariki who put their heads together to come up with the design. The design was inspired by the tamariki thinking the tail was a mermaid’s. The scales represent this. After sharing further information about our oceans, the tamariki talked about the different coloured fish, leading to the rainbow design. The hands represent the fact it takes many hands to care for our oceans (and the handprints are the children’s own).

We are looking forward to treasuring our tail for many years to come!
