This year Waitangi Day falls in the middle of Chinese New Year. At Howick Kindergarten as well as celebrating Chinese new year with a variety of art activities, lion dancing and dumping making, we discussed the Treaty of Waitangi. At mat time teacher Moana talked about the treaty being a document between two groups of people who agreed to work together and live together in harmony in Aotearoa. We shared Waiata, a book explaining how we look after each other and the whenua and agreed to make our own treaty for Howick kindergarten. Moana has written down all the things we agreed to do at kindergarten to care and show respect for each other. The children were asked to ‘sign’ our treaty by making finger stamps.  It is important that children have an understanding of our bicultural identity and the importance of showing manāki to each other.
