Last term, Sandringham Kindergarten introduced a new, ‘Get Ready For School’ programme. Designed for our 4.7 to 5+ year old learners, the programme acknowledges the evolving needs of our children as they prepare for school, and responds to the cohort initiative our local schools have introduced (children staying for longer at kindergarten).
This typically involves a daily intentional teaching time of around 20 – 40 mins, where our older tamariki are encouraged to engage in structured activities, allowing them to practice their focus and concentration skills through fun activities suited to their level.
There have been opportunities to learn about literacy, numeracy, fine motor skills – like cutting and beading. They have also learned about working in a collaborative group, following instructions, and taking turns. Our older children have felt enormously proud to be engaged in this group, and we have seen an increase in confidence and leadership skills.
Each child has their own special workbook that they can take home at the end of their kindergarten journey. It has been a great success so far and wonderful for building self esteem before heading off to school.
