We feel so fortunate here at Milford Kindergarten to have the opportunity to share with tamariki learning experiences in dance and movement which are authentic and meaningful. This term our incredible relieving kaiako (teacher) Tong Tong has been introducing our tamariki and kaiako to the Chinese Umbrella Dance.
Tong Tong shares the significance of the dance and reflects on the joy of sharing her cultural knowledge and traditions with tamariki through movement.
“The dance is set to the song Rain Alley Beauty, which is inspired by the classical poem Rain Alley. The song transforms the poem’s traditional imagery into a modern folk style and, against the gentle backdrop of the Jiangnan water towns, conveys a simple heartfelt longing for a better life.
What is especially touching is how much the children enjoy the soft melody of the song and how naturally they engage with the umbrella movements. Seeing their enthusiasm and openness toward learning something new was truly moving for me—I was nearly brought to tears by their passion and joy”.
Nga mihi nui, Tong Tong, and thank you once again to our fantastic team of skilled and passionate relieving kaiako.
