The Philippines Independence day is celebrated every 12th of June as a national holiday. It is to honour the Philippines Declaration of Independence from Spain in 1898. Here at Marlborough Kindergarten, from 7-10 June, we commemorated this occasion by learning about the Phillipines and its culture through activities and discussions at mat time. As well as art activities, singing and dancing. On the 9th of June, our Filipino families came into kindergarten to participate in the festivities. Together, we sang, danced and the teachers served Filipino food to the children, brought in for us to try.
We are fortunate here at Marlborough Kindergarten to have a multicultural community and through this, we are developing an understanding of others and embracing diversity. The children are learning how to feel comfortable and safe within their own cultures and it allows us to recognise and celebrate peoples differences.
