Kia ora and welcome to Remuera Kindergarten
Relationships – At Remuera Kindergarten we pride ourselves on the strong relationships with whānau and the local community which have been nurtured over a number of years. This has helped to build a strong sense whanaungatanga (connection) within our kindergarten. We work in partnership with parents and whānau to create smooth transitions from home to kindergarten.
Belonging – Children’s sense of belonging is nurtured through relationships and interactions. We respect each child as an individual and are responsive to the aspirations of their family. Parents trust us to provide an environment where their tamariki learn to initiate and maintain relationships, and develop empathy and regard for others.
Family and community – Our parents trust that we provide an environment where respectful relationships, encouragement, warmth, acceptance and aroha are the norm. Tamariki have a strong sense of culture, identity and inclusion with links to their wider worlds being affirmed and extended. We teach from the heart and have an open-door policy at all times; encouraging families to stay and be involved. Family events are enjoyed by all.
Holistic development – Our curriculum reflects the holistic way in which children learn and grow (spiritually, emotionally, physically and socially) through play. Because children develop holistically, they need a broad enriched curriculum that enables them to grow their capabilities across all dimensions. Our philosophy values play as meaningful learning, and we see children as capable and confident learners who can be active participants make decisions and be involved in determining their own learning goals.
Leading their learning – We see all children as capable and confident learners. We celebrate their unique knowledge, skills and attitudes which build learning dispositions and encourage them to take an active part in their learning. Teachers support children by focusing on children’s strengths and interests and planning for future learning possibilities. We value children’s culture, identity and the contributions families make that enrich our programme.
Self-regulation and resilience – Our teaching approaches and strategies support children to understand, express and regulate their emotions and build resilience and a sense of self-worth. We establish a positive atmosphere and reinforce positive behaviour by noticing children’s efforts and providing feedback and encouragement. With us children develop social skills that enable them to establish and maintain friendships and participate in whanaungatanga relationships.
Empowerment – Our curriculum is designed to empower children to learn and grow, encouraging learning dispositions like creativity, curiousity, persistence, and a growing independence where children have agency and act on their ideas, developing and develop knowledge and skills in areas that interest them. Perspectives on empowerment are culturally located so kaiako seek the input of children, their parents and whānau when designing the local curriculum.
Bicultural curriculm – Our bicultural practice is woven authentically through our daily practice. Children develop a sound knowledge and respect for te ao Māori by acknowledging Māori tikanga, values, and language. Kaiako weave together the principles and strands of our curriculum Te Whariki in collaboration with parents, whanau and community.
