The AKA Difference

Established in 1908 AKA is embedded in the history and fabric of communities in Tāmaki Makaurau. We’ve played an integral role in early childhood education since 1908 and are a treasured part of hundreds of thousands of childhood memories spanning over 115 years!

Natural environments Known for our large, natural outdoor spaces with real grass, trees and gardens, our learning environments help tamariki connect with nature and develop their skills in the natural world. You will discover our settings are very different to many other ECE centres with artificial surfaces and limited natural spaces.

Affordable, accessible Founded as a Charity with the purpose of providing access to affordable, quality education for all tamariki, this is still at the core of our organisation today. We welcome 2-5 year olds and provide a minimum of 20 free* ECE hours for these ages.

High quality education The education of tamariki is at the heart of all we do, which shows in our commitment to 100% qualified teachers. Our kindergartens follow Te Whāriki the NZ Early Childhood Education curriculum with a focus on learning through play. We provide an excellent introduction to education, fostering a curiosity for knowledge that tamariki will build on as they grow and continue on their education journey.

Partnership We acknowledge and celebrate the rich cultural diversity across our city and work together with families from all cultural backgrounds to build a sense of belonging manākitanga and respect.

Our Māori name Ngā Tamariki Puāwai o Tāmaki was gifted by mana whenua Ngāti Whatua and we have committed to our bicultural journey as an organisation.

Haere Mai! Come along to our Open Week to discover the AKA difference.

*Number of free ECE hours vary. 2 year old spaces subject to availability. Talk to the team at your local kindy to find out more.
