The historical events of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi offers many exciting and varied narratives and stories for tamariki to explore. This year we continue to explore and deepen our understandings of treaties and agreements, in particular Te Tiriti o Waitangi and our Milford Kindergarten Tiriti. We have considered the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi through the lens of one of our favourite pūrākau (traditional kōrero) of Tāne te wānanga and his ascension to Toi o rangi to retrieve the 3 baskets of knowledge for the people. We considered how this pūrākau may have helped people decide what was important to have in Te Tiriti and what we should, in turn, think about for our own Milford Kindergarten Tiriti. By retelling and engaging with traditional kōrero through play experiences we have the opportunity to really consider the relevance of our own Tiriti for us as a whānau and community of learners at Milford Kindergarten. By offering tamariki these opportunities to engage meaningfully and to share with authenticity their own voices we hope to encourage our tamariki to feel confident and culturally capable citizens of Aotearoa.
