At Titirangi Kindergarten we have been following the Women’s Fifa World Cup. This interest was sparked when one of our children brought in photos for news of their older sibling, who has been heavily involved with the team support at Eden Park.
The children have been learning to identify and draw countries flags, designing their own soccer jerseys and practicing ball kicking skills, with one child playing goal keeper.
At mat times we have been learning critical thinking skills by match predicting upcoming games, discussing the different teams and talking about how they have been doing throughout the competition. The children then decide how many goals they think each team may score, or if it may be a draw.
We also wanted our families to be involved, so we sent each child home with a flag from one of the FIFA team countries and asked them to find out something interesting about that country.
We had such a fantastic response from our families, with one child who had learnt about Spain learning how to Flamenco dance. Another brought in Mochi (Japanese ice cream) to share.
Children share their interesting facts and then locate their country on the world map. Our world map is now full of interesting facts from our families. The children love to point out their own country by identifying the flag to their friends and tell them about it. We are looking forward to our next adventure with the Rugby World Cup.
