At Howick Kindergarten, we love to follow children’s interests—and lately, science has been a big focus! Our kaiako have been thoughtfully designing hands-on science experiences, including baking, that nurture important skills such as problem-solving, observing, thinking, and questioning. These activities spark curiosity and encourage tamariki to explore how things work in the world around them.
Children are active decision-makers in our programme. Recently, they were invited to vote for their top five favourite experiments from the Kitchen Science Cookbook . This process gave them genuine ownership over their learning, and our teachers have enjoyed planning and delivering the experiments chosen by the children.
From Marble Milk to Unicorn Noodles, Bouncy Bubbles to Bubbly Floaters, floating eggs to icy candles, each activity has brought excitement, wonder, and plenty of discussion. Tamariki loved watching colours swirl, bubbles bounce, and mixtures transform. Their conversations, predictions, and shared discoveries highlighted the power of child-led learning.
We are proud to offer a rich, playful, and engaging science curriculum that supports children’s natural curiosity and helps build lifelong learning skills.
