At Favona Kindergarten, our tamariki recently experienced two very special visits from our local community heroes, firefighters and police officers. Each visit brought its own unique learning, excitement, and meaningful connections that we will treasure for a long time.

Our first visit was from the firefighters from Māngere Fire Station. For many days, our tamariki had been eagerly waiting, wondering when the big fire truck would arrive. When it finally did, the excitement in the air was simply priceless!

The firefighters introduced us to the special gear they wear to stay safe. Tamariki were fascinated as they learned about the purpose of each item from helmets and boots to oxygen tanks and masks. There was a real sense of wonder as tamariki observed how firefighters prepare themselves before helping others.

Curiosity filled the space as tamariki asked thoughtful questions like, “Can you still talk when you wear the mask?” and excitedly noticed how the gloves protect firefighters from heat. It was a rich learning moment, where tamariki explored ideas about safety, protection, and helping others.

The experience became even more memorable when tamariki had the chance to explore the fire truck and take part in a hands-on activity using the hose to spray water with guidance. This active experience allowed them to connect their learning with real life action, deepening their understanding in a joyful and meaningful way. A key message from the visit stayed with us: Get Out! Stay Out! an important reminder about fire safety that our tamariki can carry with them.

Soon after, we welcomed our second group of community helpers, police officers from Māngere Police Station. Their arrival sparked a different kind of excitement, as tamariki noticed the flashing lights and eagerly gathered to greet them with a warm “Kia ora” and a waiata.

This visit focused on relationships, trust, and understanding the role of police in our community. The officers shared how they help people, keep communities safe, and support us when we need help. Tamariki engaged in thoughtful conversations, sharing their own ideas about rules, fairness, and caring for others.

Questions like, “When do police use the loud siren?” and “What happens when someone does bad things?” opened up meaningful discussions. Tamariki began to explore the idea that rules help keep everyone safe and that police are there to guide and protect and  respond to emergencies.

It was wonderful to see tamariki expressing their thoughts with confidence, building positive connections with the officers, and developing a sense of trust.

These two visits, while different in experience, both supported our tamariki to grow in their understanding of the world around them. Through hands on exploration with firefighters and thoughtful conversations with police, children developed knowledge, confidence, and a stronger sense of belonging within their community.

We are incredibly grateful to our local firefighters and police officers for sharing their time, knowledge, and care with us.

What a meaningful and memorable time it has been at Favona Kindergarten full of learning, connection, and Whanaungatanga
