“Learner identity is enhanced when children’s home languages and cultures are valued in education settings and when kaiako respond to their cultural ways of knowing and being.” – Te Whāriki, Early Childhood Curriculum

At Remuera Kindergarten we regularly weave cultural experiences into our planning to strengthen learner identity and belonging. On Tuesday, 17th February, we held a special morning celebrating Chinese New Year — the Year of the Horse. This provided children with opportunities to explore Chinese cultural traditions and deepen their understanding of the wider world. Over the last few days, we shared with children the legend of Nian and explored how Chinese people celebrate the New Year, sparking fascination among the children. Many shared what they learned with their families, extending learning beyond the kindergarten.

Whānau joined the celebration and supported a range of Chinese-themed activities, including Chinese calligraphy, dragon and lion dance experiences, and eating yummy dumplings. These shared experiences honoured cultural traditions, strengthened connections within our kindergarten community, and enriched children’s learning.
