At Howick Kindergarten, we’re proud to offer a robust, culturally responsive curriculum that celebrates the diverse cultures of Aotearoa and the Pacific. Recently, our tamariki were treated to an exciting Cook Island drum performance, sparking joy, rhythm, and connection across our learning community.

The talented group began by introducing themselves and the traditional drums they played. The powerful beats filled our kindergarten with energy as children clapped, danced, and even had a turn playing the drums themselves! The performers also wove in familiar early childhood songs, adding a Pasifika twist that had everyone smiling and moving to the rhythm.

The group’s leader — a former early childhood teacher — had a wonderful way of engaging with our tamariki, making the experience both educational and deeply meaningful. Afterwards, the children eagerly shared what they loved most — from “doing the drums” and “dancing” to loving “all the people here.”

We are incredibly grateful to our Howick Kindergarten whānau, whose generous fundraising efforts make experiences like this possible. The money raised is thoughtfully invested back into our programme to provide enriching learning opportunities that extend children’s curiosity, creativity, and cultural understanding.

At Howick Kindergarten, we believe in investing in experiences that matter — those that build connection, celebrate diversity, and inspire a lifelong love of learning. This Cook Island drum performance was a beautiful reminder of how music brings us together as a community.
